The day after Alexander died, his inner circle of “bodyguards” (eg his leading commanders) had a conference to decide who would take the king's place. Would it be Roxanne's unborn child? What about Heracles, his son to Barsine? Or perhaps Perdiccas, his second-in-command? But there is another, waiting in the wings, and he is the favourite of the army.
