WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? DO YOU HATE THE INTERNET?
We have been podcasting for ten years. People seem to like what we do. We put a lot of time and energy into producing our shows. Up until now, we have given them away for free. Between all of the podcast series we have produced over the last decade, we have given away something like 1000 hours of free content which have been listened to by an estimated one million people.
So now we want to try to earn a living out of it. Is that bad? We hope that over the next few years, we might be able to produce a handful of concurrent series on topics ranging from history to politics and to earn a comfortable living from it. With the amount of work it takes to produce a show, we need to have the hours available to us. We can’t produce a couple of podcasts a week AND continue to work our day jobs. Advertising isn’t a model we have much faith in – we tried that back in 2005 with The Podcast Network and learned that it can all disappear overnight (which is what happened when the GFC hit).
For a few years, Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor of WIRED Magazine, has been promoting this idea of 1000 True Fans:
“The gist of 1,000 True Fans can be stated simply: A creator, such as an artist, musician, photographer, craftsperson, performer, animator, designer, videomaker, or author – in other words, anyone producing works of art – needs to acquire only 1,000 True Fans to make a living.”
We like that idea. 1000 people sounds like a reasonable goal. Out of the million people who have enjoyed our previous podcasts for free over the last ten years, we hope we can find 1000 True Fans who are willing and able to support our work.
HOW DO I KNOW YOU DON’T SUCK AND YOU’LL STICK TO IT?
If you aren’t already familiar with our work, then we suggest you go and listen to our other shows. If you don’t trust we’ll do a good job with Alexander, then don’t sign up. But we think we’ve proven our mettle and have a pretty good track record. Napoleon ran for about 60 episodes. WWII is still running and has a over 100 episodes. Our Life Of Caesar show has 48 episodes under its belt and and now we’re doing the Life Of Augustus Caesar. The No Illusions Show ran for over 400 episodes.
